Would  + like     Querer / desear

 

 Would is another modal auxiliary verb (like can, must and should). In the coming lessons we will introduce them little by little.

'Would' es otro de los verbos auxiliares modales (tal como lo son 'can', 'must' y 'should'). En las próximas lecciones los seguiremos introduciendo de a poco

 

 

   Would is sometimes used for offering, inviting or for requests: A veces utilizamos 'would' para ofrecer, invitar o para pedir cosas:
Examples     Ejemplos

Waiter....I'd like the menu, please...(request) Mozo...Quisiera el menú, si es tan amable...(pedido)

Would you like something to drink?   (offer) ¿Quieres algo de beber? (ofrecimiento)

Would you like to come to the party with us?   (invitation) ¿Quieres venir a la fiesta con nosotros? (invitación)
 

 

NOTE:  would is the same for all persons...We generally use it with the first person singular: I'd like = I would like is a polite way of saying what you want. NOTA: 'would' es invariable para todas las personas...Generalmente lo utilizamos en la primera persona del singular: 'I'd like' = 'I would like' y es una forma de cortesía para decir que quieres alguna cosa.

I'd like to try that red shirt, please.   Me gustaría probarme esa camisa roja, por favor.

Sometimes it is a bit confusing for the foreing students of the English language to understand the differnce between like and   would like... Remember that we use the verb like for facts and personal preferences. Would like is used for offers and requests instead. A veces se torna un poco confuso para los estudiantes extranjeros del idioma inglés el entender la diferencia entre el verbo 'like' y  el mismo verbo seguido de 'would '...Recuerda que utilizamos el verbo 'like' para cosas concretas y preferencias personales. 'Would like' se utiliza en cambio para ofrecer y para pedir cosas.

         

I like Cuban cigars.

 

Me gustan los cigarros cubanos
I'd like a Cuban cigar.   Quisiera o me gustaría un cigarro cubano.
