Used to     Soler / solía

 

  We use USED TO + an infinitive (smoke, run etc) when we want to say that something happended regularly in the past but that it doesn't happen any more. Se utiliza la estructura USED TO + un verbo en infinitivo (fumar, correr) cuando queremos decir que algo sucedía regularmente en el pasado  pero que ya no sucede más.
 
Examples     Ejemplos

I used to run 10 km a day...but now I am too old for that. Solía correr 10 kilómetros por día...pero ahora estoy muy viejo para eso.

We used to play cards until midnight. Solíamos jugar a las cartas hasta la medianoche.

'Do you often go to the cinema?' 'No, but I used to.' -¿Vas al cine seguido? -No, pero solía hacerlo.
This is Tom....He used to smoke 100 cigarettes a day. Este es Tomás....Solía fumar cien cigarrillos por día.
 

    TOM or what is left of him....(Tomás o lo que queda de el)

 

 

You always use  used to in the past. This structure does not exist in the present.You cannot say I use to do. If you want to express the same idea you have to use the present simple instead ( I do).  Siempre su utiliza el used to en pasado. Esta estructura no existe en el presente o en el futuro....No puedes decir suelo hacer (al menos no en inglés).Si deseas expresar la misma idea en presente utiliza el presente con do o does.

 

 

He used to live in Canada

 

Solía vivir en Canadá.
He lives in Canada.   Vive en Canadá.
     
There used to be a tower there...   Solía haber una torre allí...
There is a tower in the center of the town.   Hay una torre en el centro del pueblo.

 

 

USED To is often used for past situations that no longer exist....  A menudo se utiliza USED TO para situaciones pasadas que ya no existen más.

 

He used to live in Canada but now he lives in Argentina

 

Solía vivir en Canadá pero ahora vive en la Argentina.
     
Linda used to wear long hair, but now she has cut it.   Linda solía usar el pelo largo, pero ahora se lo ha cortado.

We use used to + the infinitive without to.

 

Se utiliza el 'used to'  + el infinitivo sin to.
