Present simple or continuous?

¿Presente simple o progresivo?

Sometimes it is a bit difficult to decide which of these two tenses to use...In this lesson we will give you some tips for the correct use of both tenses.

A veces se hace un poco dificultoso el tratar de decidir entre estos dos tiempos verbales...En esta lección te daremos algunas claves para la correcta utilización de los mismos.

As a rule, we use the present continuous when something is happening at or around the time of speaking:

En general, utilizamos el presente continuo cuando algo está sucediendo en o cerca del momento de hablar:


*'Where is Alan?' 'He is* *playing football in the garden.'*		*-¿Donde está Alan? -Está jugando al fútbol en el jardín.*
*The water for the tea is boiling...Look*		*El agua para el té está hirviendo...Mira.*
*'I am reading an interesting book right now...' 'About?' 'About love.'*		*-Estoy leyendo un libro interesante ahora... -¿De que trata? -De amor.*
*Your friend is in Brazil for two months...He is learning Portuguese.*		*Tu amigo estará en Brasil durante dos meses...Está aprendiendo portugués.*
*Suddenly, a stranger appears in your room...So you say 'What are you doing here?'*		*De repente, un extraño aparece en tu habitación...Por eso preguntas -¿Que está haciendo aquí?*
*Listen to this African man...What language is he speaking?*		*Escucha a este hombre africano...¿En que idioma está hablando?*

On the other hand, we use the present simple when we want to talk about things in general or things that happen again and again.

Por otro lado, utilizamos el presente simple cuando queremos hablar de cosas en general o de cosas que suceden una y otra vez


*Alan plays football in the park on Sundays.*		*Alan juega al fútbol en el parque los domingos.*
*Water boils at 100º Centigrades*		*El agua hierve a 100 º centígrados.*
*We read a lot of Shakespeare at school.*		*Leemos mucho a Shakespeare en la escuela.*
*Normal people learn to read and write at six or seven...*		*La gente normal aprende a leer y a escribir a los seis o siete años...*
*'What do you usually do at night?' 'I watch tv.'*		*-¿Usualmente que haces a la noche? -Miro televisión.*
*I speak English, but unfortunately I don't speak Spanish.*		*Hablo inglés, pero desafortunadamente no hablo castellano.*

To remember: We use the present continuous for temporary situations.

Para recordar: utilizamos el presente progresivo para situaciones temporales.

*I am working here until I can find something better...*		*Estoy trabajando aquí hasta que pueda encontrar algo mejor...*
*I am taking a semester off until I feel better*		*Me estoy tomando un semestre libre hasta que me sienta mejor.*
*That tv set isn't working...It broke down last week!*		*Ese aparato de televisión no esta funcionando. Se descompuso la semana pasada.*

Remember also that we use the present simple for permanent situations.

Recuerda además que utilizamos el presente simple para situaciones permanentes.

*I work as a doctor...And I love this profession!*		*Trabajo de médico...¡Y me encanta esta profesión!*
*I quit school because I don't like it at all.*		*Dejo la escuela porque no me gusta para nada.*
*That tv doesn't work. We have to throw it away!*		*Ese aparato de televisión no anda. ¡Tenemos que botarlo!*

Time adverbials such as now, at present or at the moment generally go together with the present continuous.

Los adverbios de tiempo tales como ahora o en este momento generalmente acompañan al presente continuo.

'What is he doing now?' 'He is looking for his keys.'		-¿Que está haciendo ahora? -Está buscando las llaves.
She is busy at present...She is talking with the president.		En este momento está ocupada...Está hablando con el presidente.
He is a pilot...but he is not working at the moment.		Es piloto...pero no está trabajando en este momento.

Time adverbials such as in the morning, in the afternoon, at night, in the summer, in spring, every day etc. generally go together with the present simple. For a complete list read the time adverbials that come together with the present simple. Revise also time prepositions.

Los adverbios de tiempo tales como a la mañana, a la tarde, a la noche, en verano, en primavera, cada día etc. en general acompañan al presente simple. Para una lista más detallada lee los adverbios de tiempo que acompañan al presente simple. Repasa también las preposiciones de tiempo.

I always have a shower in the morning.		Siempre me ducho por la mañana.
'What does she do at night?' 'She works in a bar.'		-¿Que hace a la noche? -Trabaja en un bar.
We often go for long walks in spring...		A menudo salimos a dar largas caminatas en primavera...
Every day I do the same thing!		¡Cada día hago lo mismo!
