The simple past: regular verbs         
                         

 

El pasado simple: verbos regulares
 

    We use it to refer to moments and periods of time that have already finished, especially when we mention the time. These moments can be short actions that end quickly. It can also be used with longer periods and actions.

 

  

 

 Lo usamos para referirnos a periodos o momentos de tiempo que ya han terminado, especialmente cuando mencionamos el tiempo. Estos períodos pueden ser acciones cortas que terminen rápido. Pero también se puede usar para períodos y acciones más largas.

There are rules of spelling and rules of pronunciation for the regular verbs in the past simple. In this lesson we will give you the rules of spelling

   

Hay tanto reglas de ortografía como reglas de pronunciación para los verbos regulares en el pasado simple .En esta lección te daremos  las reglas de ortografía
             A) Most verbs are regular and show this regularity by adding -ed in the end.            A) La mayoría de los verbos en pasado son regulares y manifiestan esta regularidad porque agregan ed en la terminación.   
Examples:   work  worked      


trabajar
                       rain   rained     llover
                       start  started     comenzar
       
        B) If the base of the verb already ends in e we only add -d                   B) Si la base del verbo ya presenta una e final agregamos sólo la -d
Examples:    live  -lived     vivir
                        love -loved     amar

                        like  -liked

       C) If the verb ends in a consonant plus -y  you have to turn the y into -ied   C) Sí el verbo termina en una consonante más una -y usted tendrá que cambiar la y en -ied
Examples:  

                       study  -studied

estudiar

                       carry   -carried

 llevar

                       hurry   -hurried

 apresurarse
       D ) But if the verb ends in a vowel (a,e,i,o,u) plus -y you have to add  only -ed    D)Pero si el verbo termina en una vocal (a,e,i,o,u) más -y tienes que agregarle sólo -ed

          Sometimes you have to double some letters:

A veces tienes que duplicar una letra:
Examples:
        Double the consonant when you have a consonant after a short stressed vowel at the end of the word Duplicas la consonante cuando tienes una consonante que siga a una vocal que vaya acentuada en el final de una palabra.

Examples:   stop – stopped

                       swap - swapped cambiar
                       plan  - planned planificar
       But if the consonant is not stressed, we do not double it: Pero si la consonante no va acentuada, no la duplicamos:

To make negative sentences with this tense you have to use:
did + not  (didn't)  

   

  Para hacer oraciones negativas con este tiempo verbal deberás utilizar: did + not (didn't)

 

   

 
                         But note:                    Pero observa:    
The negative auxiliary did not or didn't  is invariable for all persons. (I, you, he, etc )     El auxiliar negativo did not o didn't es invariable para todas las personas (yo, tú, él etc)
